Rooftop solar in Colorado
Colorado's residential solar market is dominated by Xcel Energy in the populated Front Range corridor, with Black Hills Energy serving the southeastern portion of the state and several large cities running their own municipal utilities. Which utility serves your address determines what rebates are available, how excess generation is credited, and what the interconnection timeline looks like.
Utility coverage
Xcel Energy
Investor-owned utility serving Denver, Boulder, Fort Collins, and most of the Front Range plus parts of the Western Slope.
Black Hills Energy
Investor-owned utility serving Pueblo, Cañon City, and much of southeastern Colorado.
Municipal utilities
Several large Colorado cities run their own electric utilities — most notably Colorado Springs Utilities (the state's largest muni), Fort Collins Utilities, and Longmont Power & Communications. Solar economics for these addresses are governed by the muni, not Xcel or Black Hills.
